For Employers

The ROADS Foundation

The ROADS Foundation Ltd is a not for profit organisation that was established in November 2006 to provide training and development opportunities for young people in regional communities across Western Australia by assisting them with traineeship opportunities in civil construction within their region.

The ROADS Foundation commenced operations in April 2007 and is a company limited by guarantee and is governed by a Board of Directors. The Board is made up of representatives from interested organisations including Main Roads WA, the Department of Education and Training, the WA Local Government Association and civil contractors.

The ROADS Foundation aims to address workforce shortages in the road construction industry, by developing, coordinating and facilitating traineeship programs.

Our Services

The ROADS Foundation works closely with employers to ensure Priority Start Obligations are met, to discuss traineeship opportunities, and to provide advice and support in recruiting and retaining suitable trainees for your organisation by:

  • Linking with appropriate government agencies (AAC & ApprentiCentre) to facilitate commencement of traineeship and completion of training contract
  • Linking with a Registered Training Organisation for the training and assessment of the employee
  • Explain roles and responsibilities of all parties involved (AAC, ApprentiCentre & RTO)
  • Providing information on the eligibility of and assistance in sourcing Federal Government incentives
  • Providing guidance to facilitate a greater understanding of the Australian Apprenticeship
  • System and the employer’s obligatory requirements
  • Providing supervisor information sessions outlining their responsibility to provide on-the-job training that relates to the competencies outlined within the qualification & Training Plan
  • Outline (TPO)
  • Support and monitoring of traineeship from commencement to completion, including ensuring registration of training contract and progress of off-the-job training, to ensure any problems are resolved promptly

The Trainee Support Coordinator also ensures trainees are ‘job-ready’ and provides support and assistance to the trainee throughout the traineeship. In addition, all trainees are linked with an external mentor for the first two to six months of their traineeship to address any emotional and social needs. The mentor also provides localised support to the trainee and act as a conduit between the trainee and Trainee Support Coordinator so any issues can be resolved in their infancy.

Existing Workers

The ROADS Foundation is piloting an existing worker program with several Local Governments. The ROADS Foundation aims to build underpinning knowledge and address skills shortages in Western Australia, by providing the opportunity for existing workers to formalise their existing skills in line with the requirements of their employer by gaining a nationally recognised qualification in civil construction.
